In the world of 2025, it is undeniable that technology surrounds us at every turn. While I have my own opinions on the effects that constant connectivity is having on our minds as a society, there is one digital-born trend that I have come to appreciate. During the pandemic in 2020, a tiktok movement swept across our screens as people needed to find the good in life in order to survive. That trend was the idea of “main character energy.”
At its core, main character energy is about seeing yourself as the protagonist in your own movie. These videos took ordinary moments, such as going to the grocery store, driving at sunset, and drinking coffee by a window and set them to cinematic music that somehow amplified the magic of the moment by focusing on the aesthetics of it. While it may seem a little whimsical at first, it empowered people to not focus on the isolation and loneliness of the time, but instead focus on the elegance of the right now. In a world filled with stress and stagnancy, it offered an invitation to embrace individuality, creativity, and self-worth in even the simplest routines.
Main character energy caught on because it tapped in to something deeper than just the pretty videos that came from it. Emotionally, people were exhausted from the uncertainty and anxiety these times called for. It was a simple way that people could focus their energy on the joyful moments and get lost in it. It became less about showing off to others and more about believing that this is what life really looked like from your point of view.
Psychologically, the trend gave people a sense of control when there was little to be had at the time. By imaging themselves as the “protagonist” in their situation, they could create their own story and turn simple mundane activities like cleaning their space or making coffee into something significant. It was a powerful reminder that you do not need some big event to feel important; you can decide to see your own life as meaningful right now.
For many, main character energy became more than a trend – it became a tool for confidence, creativity, and presence. Some could even a consider it a lifestyle because of how it helped open up the creative side of their minds. It allowed for new ways of self expression through hobbies, fashion, playlists, journaling, and much more. I know this was definitely the case for me. The more I have focused on the minuscule things in my life, the more I wanted to learn about myself by trying new things. It gave me the confidence to try things I had never tried before (which is how I ended up doing this blog). This allowed me to escape from the constant of everyday life and honestly, become a more interesting person.
The more I gave into this lifestyle, the more I have found myself switching from a “life is happening to me” mindset and more to a “this is my story” mindset. Since developing this way of thinking, I have been able to take life a lot less serious. With that, embodying a more confident and happy person.
While trying to take on “main character energy” may seem slightly narcissistic, it is less about being the center of attention and more about being intentional in your own story. It is about choosing to see yourself as worthy of the spotlight and embracing the beauty in the life you have created.
This blog will be my way of taking you along on my journey to completely integrating main character energy into my life so that I can continue to grow and learn more of my quirks. Hopefully, you also get some ideas of how to value the little things in your life. I have attached a playlist that always makes me feel alive on a night drive with the windows down. Enjoy!
